Can you sell yourself in an interview?

Today we will discuss selling yourself in an interview, and how to win!Something that many people seem to forget is that YOU are your own best salesman. You know yourself best, what you are capable of, what your likes and dislikes are, what your goals are and what interests you. It’s your task, no matter where you are online, offline, at networking events, anywhere, is to get that message across in the best way possible.

“SELLTERVIEW” – selling you in an interview

Here are some tips to help you ace that job interview, to let your personal brand shine through and make an excellent impression. Always remember that the interviewer does not have an intimate knowledge of who you are except what they have seen from your resume or CV – you need to make that introduction memorable.

  • As you are most likely being observed from the moment you set foot in the building, make sure that you are nice to everybody from the parking attendant to the receptionist.
  • Know the name of your interviewer.
  • Be dressed for success. Make sure you dress professionally and look the part.
  • Even if it’s a start-up, stick to professional wear – it’s a sign of respect.
  • Be on time but not too early – 10 minutes before your scheduled interview is normally a good bet unless you have been instructed otherwise.
  • Stay calm and take time to answer the questions that are asked. If you are not sure, ask the interviewer to repeat the question.
  • Prepare a list of questions about the company or job – show them that you have taken time and prepared for the interview.
  • Highlight your interests and passions, and let your personality come through in an interview.
  • Find ways to sell yourself as a capable, innovative, self motivated learner with a “can-do” attitude.
  • Talk about how you would fit with the company rather than stating you would
  • like learn from them – it’s all about you and what you are capable of.
  • When discussing previous job responsibilities, always describe results and action items highlighting your role in them.

This is all about presenting you, your skills and the value you can add to them, in the best way possible.
