|Today we will explore the common theme I see in my work as a career coach why people feel lost in their Careers.|
This No. 1 reason why people feel lost in their Careers is No purpose – Not knowing what they are here to do.
|Can you identify with this?|
Don’t worry you are not alone. To be able to give you more clarity and a sense of direction in life, you need to determine what your purpose is.Your purpose is a pointer to what you really, really want – it’s a seat of true, raw passion that no amount of money can buy.
The heart of human excellence often begins to beat when you discover a pursuit that absorbs you, frees you, challenges you or gives you a sense of meaning, joy or passion.

How to identify your purpose
There are many courses, workshops and programs offered out there to help you determine your purpose, but what I would like to do is share a favourite of mine with you, to get you thinking and to get you moving in the direction of finding out what your purpose in this life is.
It’s a combination of asking yourself the right questions and then journaling (writing down) the answers you come up with. Once you are done with the exercise, think about the answers you have given, it will go a long way in helping you get some clarity.
8 questions that will help give your career some purpose:
- What makes your heart sing?In other words, what activities, hobbies, events or goals do you love working on?
- What recurring dreams do you have?
If you keep dreaming the same thing it must have some meaning. Dive in and discover where it leads you to.
- What excites you the most?
We all have something that makes us happy and passionate – what is yours?
- What would you do if money didn’t matter?
If money was no longer the reason to get out of bed every day – what would you do with your time?
- What kind of advice do people always come and ask you for?
The best form of learning is by teaching – what do people come and seek your advice about ? This is obviously something they find of value otherwise they wouldn’t come to you.
- What do you believe is possible for you?
What are your core beliefs about your own potential? What is possible in your life?
- What is the one thing you have done in life that you are most proud of?
If it’s something that’s made you proud – then it’s something you are bound to be passionate about.
- What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
What do you want to be remembered for? What do you want people to say about you when you are no longer around?
Purpose does not remain constant
One thing that most people get wrong in life is the idea that your purpose remains constant – that it never changes. Well that isn’t always the case.
As we move through life we experience many different things and thus our thinking gets coloured by those life experiences and as such our purpose will change to match that. Our purpose in life at 16 is vastly different from our purpose in life in our 30’s. The tips and techniques to determine our purpose will remain the same, but you will find that the end result can change
