As sung by Eminem in “Lose yourself”, “if you had one shot or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted in one moment. Would you capture it or just let it slip?”

The story told in the song is about struggles and life beating you down. Battling each day trying to make your dream career come to live.

Which got me thinking why do some people achieve stardom and others don’t? What makes some people succeed and others fail?

The message I take from the song is you have to set goals and chase them till you achieve it. No room for a pit stop at hotel failure.

You have to keep going!!

Over the years I have met 3 types of people when it comes to goal setting.1. Those who set goals and get shit done
2. Those that set goals and procrastinate
3.Those that have a wishful thinking attitude and don’t set any goals.It’s not rocket science when I share with you that the people who achieve their success are in group1 (They set goals and get shit done!)Which group do you fall in? If you are ready to become part of this elite group here is how you can set yourself up for success.Where are you currently in your life’s journey ….

Are you a full-time student crumbling on the demands of a busy study schedule?

Have you completed your studies and you are now clueless about what to do next? Holiday for the next 3 years (if only money grew on trees, technically it is made out of paper)

Or are you currently unemployed looking for that ideal job?

Are you climbing the career ladder and constantly find yourself in the toilet, giving yourself a pep talk to pull yourself together?

Or maybe, it’s a whole other situation and you find yourself scaring the pants off you.

Here’s a tool, I’m going to share with you something that will unlock the secrets to goal setting!

Set meaningful and challenging goals 

Locke and Latham’s theory on goal setting uncovered that clear goals and appropriate feedback, were essential in the late 1960 and further research decades later found that the more difficult and specific a goal is the more likely people were to achieve it.Saying stuff like “I will try harder next time” is not effective instead saying “next time I will aim to get 8 out of 10 questions right on the test” is far more effective, as it gives you a specific goal to work towards.

Okay. So here are the 5 steps that Locke and Latham outlined to help you improve and stay on track for your success.

1. Clarity
2. Challenge
3. Commitment
4. Feedback
5. Task complexity

Step 1 – Get clarity. Find out what you want.

Maybe you failed to achieve great things in 2017 simply because you were unsure about what you wanted. Take time to think about what you want. Be honest with yourself, be very specific and get clear on the details about what you want. Do what gets you fired up. Write it down. Step 2 – Get ready to push and challenge yourself.

Get clear on how you are going to get in the work that is required to get what you want. You know that there is going to be work involved however are you actually clear about what that work is? It is easy to say okay I’m going to do it now, I’m going to start today. BUT… Have you come to terms with the amount of work it is going to take to get there?

Step 3 – Commitment 

Are you aware of hours, and sacrifices required to pull it off?
This is a vital step and if you skip this thinking, “I will start tomorrow and tomorrow never comes”. I’m afraid my friend, you are never going to get past the starting block! And this is why New Year’s Resolutions often fail.

Step 4 – Feedback, check in with yourself and with an expert.

By checking if you’re moving in the direction of your goal will help you establish that you’re heading in the right directionIn addition to this personal review, get some feedback from an expert, as they will help to bring a new perspective which will give you an opportunity to measure your progress and explore new ideas.

Step 5 – Task complexity. Keep it interesting to keep you motivated. 

Getting stressed out and overwhelmed with your goals benefits no one. Yet when the goal is too easy, it doesn’t stretch you and push you outside your comfort zone you will feel bored.
Make sure the goal keeps you on your toes.
